In India, the title covers at least four different jobs : business operations, supply chain and logistics, plant and manufacturing, and BPO or back-office operations and each one is answered to a different set of numbers. This article explains what the job actually involves, what a real day looks like, and which parts of it AI has changed.

What is an operations manager?

An operations manager is accountable for the systems, people and cost of getting a company’s core work done reliably and at the required service or cost level. They plan capacity, run the day-to-day process, own a set of numbers, and decide what happens when something breaks from a missed shipment to a staffing shortfall.

Key responsibilities include:

Planning resources and managing capacity.

Overseeing daily operations and team performance.

Monitoring costs, productivity, and service-level targets.

Resolving operational issues and improving processes.

The role varies by industry. Business operations managers coordinate cross-functional work, logistics operations managers oversee supply chains, plant operations managers manage manufacturing sites, and BPO operations managers lead teams against service-level agreements (SLAs).

What an Operations Manager Actually Does: A Real Tuesday

Job descriptions list duties. They rarely show what a manager actually decides in a day. Below is a realistic Tuesday for a mid-sized operations manager. The specifics shift by industry, but the shape of the day and the decisions involved remain similar across business, supply chain, plant and BPO roles.

07:30 : Overnight exception review: Reviews the overnight exception queue flagged by the WMS or ticketing system, rather than manually sorting issues already triaged by the system. Decides which two or three exceptions need immediate human intervention and which can wait until the stand-up.

08:15 : Daily stand-up: Reviews yesterday’s misses, such as a late dispatch, missed SLA or quality reject. Since the dashboard already shows the numbers, the meeting focuses on decisions rather than compiling data. Assigns root-cause ownership for the two misses that recurred from last week and signs off the rest as one-offs.

09:30 : Capacity planning call: Reviews next week’s capacity requirements using a forecasting tool that has already generated a draft roster and volume estimate from historical and current-order data. Overrides the draft where a known festival-week spike isn’t reflected in the model and approves the rest.

11:00 : Vendor escalation: Addresses a key supplier delay threatening Friday’s output. Decides whether to expedite at extra cost, substitute an alternate vendor, or absorb the delay and re-sequence the schedule.

12:30 : Root-cause analysis (RCA): Investigates a defect that has appeared twice this month on the same line. Determines whether it stems from a training gap, machine-calibration issue or specification problem, and assigns ownership of the fix.

14:30 : Process change sign-off: Reviews a small process change proposed by a team lead and tested on a limited batch. Approves it for full rollout, sends it back for a second test, or rejects it, updating the SOP either way.

16:00 : Team performance review: Reviews a floor or team-performance report, with a BI dashboard showing the day’s numbers against targets, such as cost per unit, OTIF or first-pass yield. Decides whether the day’s variance is simply noise or the beginning of a trend worth escalating.

17:30 : End-of-day reporting: Sends a short written summary to their own manager, rather than a raw data dump. Identifies the one issue that needs to be flagged for tomorrow.

Two of these activities, the 07:30 exception sort and the 09:30 capacity draft used to take the first two hours of the morning by hand. A system now produces a first pass in minutes.

What the manager still owns is the override: knowing which exception is actually urgent and which line in a forecast the model got wrong because it doesn’t know about Friday’s festival order spike.

The core responsibilities, grouped the way the job is actually organised

Strip away the industry-specific detail and an operations manager’s responsibilities usually fall into four connected areas. The balance between them shifts by setting, but most job descriptions and most real weeks touch all four.

Planning and capacity

This is matching what the business needs to do against what it has the people and space to do. It includes demand and supply matching, rostering, and participating in Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) ,the recurring cycle where sales forecasts, production capacity and inventory plans get reconciled.

“Capacity” means different things in different settings. In a warehouse, it’s dock doors, pickers and storage slots against expected order volume. On a BPO floor, it’s headcount and shift coverage against forecast call or ticket volume. The planning logic is similar; the units are not.

Process, quality and compliance

An operations manager owns the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that define how work gets done, and the quality checks that confirm it was done right : first-pass yield, internal audits, and spot checks against the SOP.

Statutory compliance sits alongside this, and it varies by sector and state. A plant operations manager typically works within the framework of the Factories Act, 1948, which sets conditions such as weekly working-hour limits for factory workers. A business or BPO operations manager is more likely to work within a state Shops and Establishments Act. The specific obligations differ by state and sector, so a manager checks the applicable statute or regulator directly rather than assuming a generic rule applies.

People and vendors

This covers span of control , how many people report to the manager directly or through team leads shift management, and coordinating third-party or contract labour, which is common in warehousing, manufacturing and facilities roles. It also covers supplier and vendor performance: reviewing whether a vendor is hitting agreed service levels, and managing the escalation when they don’t.

Cost, numbers and reporting

Every operations manager lives inside a small set of recurring metrics. The exact list depends on the role, but the table below covers the ones that show up most often across business, supply chain, plant and BPO settings.

                Metric

      What it measures

Reporting & what a bad week looks like

Cost per unit

Total cost of producing, handling or servicing one unit of output.

Reported to finance, plant or operations head. That flexibility is what’s changed inside operations work over the past two years, and it shows up in five places.

1. Forecasting and replenishment

Before: a demand forecast built largely from spreadsheet judgement and last year’s numbers. Now: a forecasting system produces a statistical first draft from historical and live order data. What the manager now owns: interrogating that output knowing when the model is wrong because it doesn’t know about a promotion, a festival, or a new competitor and overriding it with reasons a review can follow.

2. Exception triage

Before: the first hour of the day spent manually sorting a queue of late orders and quality flags by severity. Now: a system pre-sorts and flags the highest-priority items. What the manager now owns: designing the rule set the system triages against, and deciding when a flagged item genuinely needs a human call rather than a standard response.

3. Reporting

Before: a weekly or monthly numbers pack took a day or more to compile by hand. Now: dashboards assemble the same numbers close to instantly. What the manager now owns: the shift from producing the number to explaining it why cost per unit moved, what’s driving a utilisation dip, and what to do next.

4. Process discovery

Before: finding where a process broke down meant a workshop and manual mapping. Now: process-mining tools read system logs and surface where a process deviates from its documented path. What the manager now owns: judging which deviations are real problems versus reasonable exceptions the SOP should be updated to allow.

5. Supervising software that acts

Before: software mostly reported information and left every action to a person. Now: some systems draft actions on the manager’s behalf : a supplier follow-up, a reorder, a reconciliation note for a human to approve or send. What the manager now owns is genuinely new: defining what the system may act on unattended versus what needs sign-off, setting the threshold at which something escalates to a person, and being accountable if a system-drafted action turns out to be wrong.

This is closer to writing a policy than approving a transaction, and it’s a different kind of judgement than the role asked for five years ago.

The skills that matter now and the four that are new

The durable ones

Process thinking, numeracy, negotiation and escalation judgement have not gone anywhere. Neither has the ability to write an SOP that a new hire can actually follow without someone standing over them. These remain the base the newer skills sit on top of, not a category AI has touched.

The four AI-era ones

A scan of current operations-manager postings on Naukri and LinkedIn shows these showing up alongside the traditional requirements, more often phrased as “comfort with data and automation tools” than named by product.

1. Reading model output critically knowing when a forecast or a triage decision is wrong, and why, rather than accepting the system’s first answer.

2. Specifying an automation end to end including what happens when it hits an exception the rule wasn’t built for, not just the happy path.

3. Briefing a data or automation team asking a question in a form a model or analyst can actually answer, rather than “make this smarter.”

4. Practical fluency with the organisation’s own tools: the specific ERP, WMS or workflow system in use, not tools in general.

These sit under general categories rather than specific products in most postings: workflow automation, document or data extraction, forecasting tools, agent platforms, and BI or analytics dashboards.

Qualifications

Most employers ask for a graduate degree and relevant operations experience rather than a specific credential. Certifications in lean, Six Sigma or supply chain management — such as ASCM’s CPIM or CSCP are recognised in manufacturing and supply chain roles specifically. Whether an MBA is worth pursuing on top of that is a longer, separate decision that depends on the career path a candidate is aiming for, not something this article settles in a paragraph.

The systems an operations manager lives inside

An operations manager rarely works from a blank spreadsheet. Most of the day runs through a small set of systems, each answering a different question from the manager’s seat.

System

What it helps the manager answer

ERP

What’s the current state of orders, inventory and cost across the business, in one connected view?

WMS (warehouse management system)

Where is a specific item right now, and what’s the fastest way to pick, pack and ship it?

TMS (transport management system)

Which carrier and route gets this shipment out on time at the lowest cost?

Ticketing / workflow tools

What’s stuck, who owns it, and how long has it been sitting there?

BI dashboards

Are today’s numbers on target, and where exactly is the gap?

AI / agent layer

What does the system recommend as a first response to this exception, before a human decides?

That last layer is increasingly built on top of the ERP and WMS rather than replacing them reading data through the same interfaces a person would use, and handing a draft response to a manager rather than acting alone. How that layer is architected inside the ERP is its own detailed question and sits outside what this article covers.

Is AI replacing operations managers?

The short answer: the evidence points to task change, not role elimination. Planning, replenishment, reporting and exception triage are the tasks most likely to get a system’s first pass. Process design, negotiation, judgement when a forecast is wrong, and accountability for the outcome are staying with the person in the role.

McKinsey’s State of AI in 2026 survey, published August 2026, found that only 14% of organisations reported an actual reduction in headcount due to AI over the previous year well below the 32% who had expected reductions a year earlier though 39% of respondents now expect headcount to decrease at their organisation over the coming year.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 frames this as a broader labour-market shift rather than a single-role story: it projects 170 million new roles created globally by 2030 alongside 92 million displaced, a net increase of 78 million jobs, driven by technology alongside demographic and economic shifts.

Neither source isolates the operations-manager role specifically, so both are used here as context rather than an operations-specific figure.

On pay: the average operations manager salary in India is ₹5,53,160 per year, according to Indeed India’s salary data, last updated 2 December 2025.

What a good operations manager job description looks like

Job descriptions for this role are often generic enough to mean very little “manage day-to-day operations” appears on almost every posting and explains almost nothing. Below is a short annotated version showing what a handful of common lines actually mean once you’re on the floor.

Job-description line

What it really means

“Manage day-to-day operations across the function”

You own the exception queue, the daily numbers review, and whatever breaks before anyone else notices.

“Drive process improvement and efficiency”

You’re expected to run RCAs on repeat problems and get SOP changes signed off, not just flag issues.

“Manage vendor and third-party relationships”

You handle escalations when a supplier or contractor underperforms, including the uncomfortable calls.

“Own budget and cost targets for the function”

A weekly or monthly number :cost per unit, OTIF, or a budget line has your name against it.

“Lead and develop a team of [X]”

Span of control, shift scheduling, and performance conversations are part of the job, not an occasional task.

“Comfort with data, automation and reporting tools”

You’ll be reading system-generated forecasts and dashboards daily and expected to catch when they’re wrong.

Build the AI layer for modern operations

If the responsibilities above look like the kind of work you want to grow into, the next challenge is understanding how AI, automation, analytics and process transformation fit into that work.

The Certificate Programme in AI-Powered Operations & Process Transformation from IIM Tiruchirappalli is designed around that shift, covering AI-powered operations, process design and continuous improvement, predictive and prescriptive analytics, automation and agentic systems, supply-chain and asset operations, and responsible AI and governance.

The programme runs for approximately six months, with live online weekend sessions and a mandatory 2-day campus immersion at IIM Tiruchirappalli.

FAQs

How can an operations manager validate an AI-generated forecast?
An operations manager can validate an AI-generated forecast by comparing it with current order volumes, historical trends, planned promotions, seasonal demand and known business changes.
