One posting requires production LLM deployment; another uses the same title for a project manager who happens to sit near engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This page does three things. Third, it gives hiring managers a copy-pasteable template with three seniority variants, built from what the companies who invented the role actually write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer Job Description?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A forward deployed engineer job description describes a software engineer who builds and ships production software inside a customer&#8217;s environment rather than in the vendor&#8217;s own product organisation. It always combines hard engineering requirements with customer-facing ones, and usually includes a stated travel percentage. The role sits somewhere between a backend engineer, a solutions architect and a technical consultant, which is exactly why reading or writing a JD for it is harder than it looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This page breaks down what real FDE postings at Anthropic, OpenAI and Palantir actually contain, decodes the requirements for candidates, and gives hiring managers a copy-pasteable template built from what the companies who invented the role actually write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Real FDE Job Descriptions Actually Contain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before building a template, we read the real postings. The same job title spans junior-hire to senior-hire depending on who wrote it. This is exactly why candidates misread these postings, and why a hiring manager choosing a seniority band needs to decide consciously rather than copy-paste a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a candidate evaluating these postings, the hard requirement across all three is production LLM experience. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interviewbit.com\/varsity\/iit-delhi\/ai-engineering\">Advanced Certificate in AI Forward Deployed Engineering with IIT Delhi<\/a> is built around exactly that: six months of live sessions, five projects covering RAG, agents, evaluation and deployment, for forward deployed engineer and applied AI engineer roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Forward Deployed Engineer Roles and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every FDE posting we reviewed clusters responsibilities into four areas. None of them are generic; each traces to what real companies actually write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building and Shipping in the Customer&#8217;s Environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic&#8217;s posting asks for production applications built inside customer systems using its models, including &#8220;MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills that will be used in production workflows.&#8221; Palantir&#8217;s asks for &#8220;wrangling massive-scale data and developing custom applications tailored to customer needs.&#8221; OpenAI&#8217;s asks the engineer to &#8220;own technical delivery across multiple deployments from first prototype to stable production.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the core of the role. You are not building in a clean dev environment and handing off. You are building where the client lives, with their data, their constraints and their deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Working Directly with Customer Stakeholders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palantir: &#8220;engaging directly with customer stakeholders, from technical teams to executives.&#8221; OpenAI: &#8220;embed closely with customer teams, understand their needs, and guide adoption of what you build.&#8221; This is a hard requirement in every posting, never a soft skill buried in the footer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the posting does not mention customer interaction at all, it is not an FDE role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turning One-Off Work into Reusable Patterns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Anthropic and OpenAI ask the engineer to &#8220;identify and codify repeatable deployment patterns&#8221; or build &#8220;tools, playbooks, or building blocks that others can use.&#8221; This is the most under-described FDE responsibility anywhere, and the one that distinguishes an FDE from a consultant. You solve the client&#8217;s problem once, then make sure the next client gets the solution in days instead of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Feeding the Field Back into Product<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI asks the FDE to &#8220;share field feedback that helps Research and Product understand where the models succeed and where they can improve.&#8221; Anthropic asks FDEs to &#8220;contribute insights back to our Product and Engineering teams.&#8221; This is the part of the job candidates never expect: you are not just deploying, you are shaping the product roadmap based on what breaks and what works in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What FDE Job Descriptions Ask For: Requirements, Decoded<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Engineering Bar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Production Python across all three postings, with TypeScript, Java or C++ named as alternates or extras. Anthropic asks for &#8220;strong programming skills with proficiency in Python (and ideally in one or more additional languages like TypeScript, Java, etc) and experience shipping production applications.&#8221; Palantir names &#8220;Python, Java, C++, TypeScript\/JavaScript, or similar.&#8221; The common thread is not a specific language; it is the ability to ship production code, not prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The LLM Bar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is now the line between an FDE posting and a solutions-engineer posting. OpenAI requires having &#8220;built or deployed systems powered by LLMs or generative models and understand how model behaviour affects product experience.&#8221; Anthropic asks for &#8220;production experience with LLMs including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale.&#8221; If the posting does not mention LLMs, AI models or generative systems, it is a solutions-engineer role wearing an FDE title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Customer-Facing Bar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic asks for &#8220;4+ years in technical customer-facing roles, software engineering with consulting, or as a technical founder.&#8221; Note what that list reveals: consulting and founding both count as relevant experience, which is unusual and useful to a career switcher. OpenAI asks for &#8220;5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work.&#8221; Palantir asks for just 1+ years but emphasises &#8220;comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving objectives and iteration with users.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Phrases to Read Carefully<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real postings use phrases that describe a specific kind of job:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&#8220;High agency&#8221;<\/strong> (Anthropic): You will have unclear requirements and will be expected to figure it out yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Navigating organisational complexity&#8221;<\/strong> (Anthropic): The client&#8217;s org chart will be a maze. You need to find the decision-maker without a map.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Decide decisively under uncertainty&#8221;<\/strong> (OpenAI): You will not have enough information. You will have to choose anyway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Composure under pressure&#8221;<\/strong> (OpenAI): Something will break in front of the client. You need to fix it while they watch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The reverse: phrases that mean this is not really an FDE role.<\/strong> No coding requirement. No production ownership. Heavy account-management language. No stated travel. No mention of building or deploying. If the posting reads like a project manager with a technical title, it is a project manager with a technical title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three questions to ask the recruiter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What percentage of the week is hands-on-keyboard coding?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I own the deployment end to end, or hand off to another team?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When was the last time someone in this role shipped code to production at a client site?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Domain Preferences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic names &#8220;financial services, healthcare\/life sciences, or another enterprise vertical&#8221; as a plus. Regulated-domain experience is a differentiator, not a footnote. If you have worked in banking, healthcare or government IT, say so prominently in your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Indian FDE Job Descriptions Differ from US Ones<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the Indian FDE postings we reviewed in September 2026, three differences stood out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Salary bands are stated in US postings and almost never in Indian ones.<\/strong> US pay-transparency rules in California, New York, Colorado and Washington force disclosure. India has no equivalent. Of the Indian FDE listings we reviewed on Indeed India, only one displayed a band. This is the single most practical thing an Indian candidate should know: you will have to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The experience bar clusters differently.<\/strong> Indian postings we reviewed asked for roughly 2 to 6 years: &#8220;2+ years of experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, or a similar customer-facing technical role&#8221; was common. True junior FDE openings of the Palantir 1+ year kind were not observed in India. The Indian market treats FDE as a mid-career role, not an entry-level one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Travel is quantified in US postings and rarely in Indian ones.<\/strong> US postings specify 25% or 50%. Indian postings either omit travel entirely or say &#8220;willing to travel&#8221; without a number. Ask for a number before you accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are observations from a September 2026 sample, not a measured survey. The Indian FDE job market is moving fast; re-check when you apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Forward Deployed Engineer Job Description Template You Can Use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The template below mirrors what the real postings above contain.
